Testimonials

No mulesing since 2003

Dear Chad,

I would like to take this opportunity to congratulate you and your family on your achievements since taking over the ownership and management of the Mumblebone Merino Stud. You have illustrated not only a commitment and passion for the wool industry, but a willingness to implement real change in order to produce a superior wool growing animal.

In what has been challenging times for the wool industry, studs like yours that make positive genetic change to meet foreseeable future demands are absolutely crucial to the industries long term future.

My family has been utilising the Mumblebone bloodline for over 50 years so I am in a good position to comment on your implemented changes. I believe our sheep now have a bigger frame, produce a finer and more even micron, produce a more 'elite' style wool and are a more blowfly resistant animal.

Plevna Downs has been a fully certified organic operation for over 10 years and directly supply our clients in the US. We must have complete confidence in the integrity and process ability of our wool to supply our clients year after year. Blowfly resistance is also critical. We have not mulesed our sheep since 2003.

Once again I commend you and your efforts and urge you to continue your quest for improvement.

Regards,
Stuart Mackenzie

Property Management

Native pastures have adapted best to the subtle soil variations and the more obvious seasonal variations to provide the best source of year round feed. The native pastures are now encouraged in a rotational grazing system that sees a short graze period followed by the required rest.

Pasture croppingis a new system that sees cereal crops sown straight into a dormant native pasture with minimal chemical & fertilizer needed. By combining rotational grazing and pasture cropping, it is possible to return run down country to a healthy and productive state in just a few years.

  3. Long wool sheep are wrinkle-free and do not need to be mulesed
  4. Short wools are fine crimping wools
  5. Short wool means wrinkly sheep and mulesing
  6. Long wools process better than short wools
